IPV and Identity
It is essential when we talk about interpersonal violence, we talk about the disparities we see with what groups of people experience interpersonal violence more often than others.
Remember, interpersonal violence is rooted in wanting to maintain power and control over others.
Below is some information and statistics about these disparities for groups who are vulnerable to experiencing interpersonal violence.
Women
1 in 3 women have experienced some form in physical violence from a partner in their lifetime
1 in 7 women have been stalked by an intimate partner
1 in 5 women have experience sexual violence in their lifetime
Folks of Color
Over 84% of Indigenous women experience interpersonal violence in their lifetime
45.1% of Black women and 40.1% of Black men have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetimes
21% of pregnant Latinas report experiencing reproductive coercion and interpersonal violence
18% of Asian-America/Pacific Islander women reported experiencing interpersonal violence in their lifetime
LGBTQIIA+ Folks
54% of trans folks have experience interpersonal violence in their lifetime
43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women have experienced interpersonal violence in their lifetime
26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced interpersonal violence in their lifetime
LGBTQIIA+ Black folks who identify under the LGBTQIIA+ umbrella are more likely to experience physical intimate partner violence compared to Black folks who do not identify under the LGBTQIIA+ umbrella
Disabled Folks
Disabled women are 12 times more likely to experience sexual violence than women without disabilities
Almost 1 in 4 disabled men experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime (not including penetrative rape)
Disabled men and women are at a higher risk of being coerced into sexual activity and unwanted sexual experiences
Folks of all genders with intellectual disabilities are 7 times more likely to experience sexual violence than folks without disabilities

49.8% of immigrant women experience interpersonal violence (almost 3x higher than the national average)
65% of immigrant women report experiencing a form of abuse related to their immigration (withholding documents, etc.)

Traditional College-Ages Students (18 - 24 years old)
Women between the ages of 18 - 24 are at the highest risk of being abused by an intimate partner
31% of Latina students report experiencing interpersonal violence since enrolling in school
Students who live off campus have a higher risk of experience stalking
